Chapter Nine

Zack kept his eyes glued to the door from his seat near the back windows at The Grill. Kelsey should be getting out of work soon, and he wanted to make sure she showed up. She was closing the shop tonight, so he knew she’d be late. Not that he should be watching for her anyway. It was a guy’s night out.

A bachelor party for both his buddy, Greg, and future brother-in-law, Mark. Greg’s wedding was in only two days and Mark’s a week later. Since a number of the guests were the same men, they’d decided to do it all at once and go wild. Or as wild as any of these guys got at The Granite Grill.

The ladies all sat laughing across the room. His sister, being the sensible woman she was, had decided to hold her bachelorette party at the same time and place. No one would dare argue with her.

In the spirit of things, the Storm ladies had gathered with Greg’s intended, Alandra, as well. The only one missing from Kristan’s wedding party was Kelsey, who promised she’d show up once she closed the shop. She’d given Amy Storm the night off, so she could attend the party for her future cousin.

As he took another sip of beer, he glanced at the guys from his hockey team, Greg, Mitch, Logan, and Mark. Mixed in with them were the Storm entourage, Erik, Alex, Nathaniel, Kevin, and Sara’s husband, TJ. They weren’t doing much more than chatting and drinking.

“This party’s kind of lame, dudes. Where are all the hot babes?” He was honestly just looking out for one with short, dark hair and a sassy smile.

Greg grinned and pointed at his future wife across the room. “That’s the hottest babe I know. No one hotter.”

Erik’s gaze roamed to his wife Tessa, while Alex, Nathaniel, TJ, and Mark each stared at the woman of their dreams.

Logan shrugged. “That wasn’t my job. I’m supplying the place, the food, and drinks. Kevin, isn’t hot chicks your area of expertise?”

Kevin scowled. “My wingman, Luke, isn’t here to help me out. He’d have this place swarming with babes.”

Everyone fell silent as they thought of their friend and family member currently overseas on deployment. Greg lifted his frosty mug and nodded.

“To Luke. So he makes it back safely.”

All drinks raised and clinked together. Erik tapped his cane on the floor. “And in one piece.”

“Amen,” a few voices mumbled as beers were tossed back.

Zack looked around. “If you’re all here, who’s got the kids? You Storms have been multiplying like rabbits lately.”

“The grandparents took them for the night. Well, part of the night,” Nathaniel said. “Darcy is still nursing Faith, so no sleepovers for her yet, but my mom will take her for short periods. Happily.”

Movement from the doorway caught Zack’s attention, and he smiled. It was only quarter past nine, and Kelsey was already here. She’d closed down fast tonight apparently. Because she hadn’t wanted to miss her friend’s party? She was sweet like that.
